My Wonderful Mother

My Wonderful Mother

“A mother is a person who seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, promptly announces she never did care for pie.” ~Tenneva Jordan

My mother was like that. I suppose most mothers are. I miss my mom, especially this week. She never did like Mother’s Day. She felt like she didn’t measure up to the pedestal upon which mother’s are set. But she did measure up… and more. Now she’s gone. Happy Mother’s Day Mom! I love you… and miss you.

I hope my kids feel about their mother the way I do about mine. I think they do. In fact I know they do. My wife isn’t perfect, or she wouldn’t have married me. But I think God shares a little of His perfection with mothers that the rest of us can only observe and enjoy… and learn from.

As anyone that knew my father can attest, he loved to quote poetry in his later years. I think he had more poems committed to memory than I’ve ever even read. One of his favorites, that he would recite often, was a poem by Pat O’Reilly. But when Dad would quote it he would substitute “wife” for “mother” at the end, reminding us kids of the love he had for our mother.

Wonderful Mother
God made a wonderful mother,
A mother who never grows old;
He made her smile of the sunshine,
And He moulded her heart of pure gold;
In her eyes He placed bright shining stars,
In her cheeks fair roses you see;
God made a wonderful mother,
And He gave that dear mother to me.
– Pat O’Reilly

Mothers are truly a blessing in our lives. May we always treat them as such.
Happy Mother’s Day to all.
