Step 1: Choose varieties wisely. Be sure to choose varieties that are proven in our area. See our flyer “Recommended Vegetable Varieties for East Idaho”. Generally speaking, for warm weather crops such as corn, tomatoes, peppers, and melons you should choose varieties with a “days to maturity” of less than 75 days to be sure they ripen before fall frost.
Step 2: Choose a sunny location. Most vegetables do best with full sun. If your garden spot only gets sun for half the day try planting root crops or leaf crops. They tolerate some shade.
Step 3: Prepare the soil. Spade or rototill soil 4 to 6” deep. For even better results spread
T&C Soil Enhancer 1 to 3 inches deep before rototilling or spading under.
Step 4: Sow seed or plant plants. See below for timing, depth, and spacing. Plants should be planted at the same depth they are in the pot.
Step 5: Water. Water thoroughly at planting, then water as needed when soil is dry ¼ inch deep.
Step 6: Feed after planting and then monthly thereafter with Save-A-Tree or T&C Fruit & Flower Food according to directions on package.
Step 7: Enjoy your harvest. Harvest as soon as crop matures. Harvesting in the morning when temperatures are cool will help keep the produce fresh longer.
Frost Protection: By using Wall o’ Water or Grow It Now plant protectors tender plants like tomatoes can be planted 2 to 6 weeks earlier than without protection. They also protect plants from our harsh winds.
